Zone 7 Water Agency to Provide Update on PFAS Management Strategy at Upcoming Board Meeting
Livermore, CA – September 3, 2024 – Zone 7 Water Agency invites the community to a special Board meeting on September 4, 2024, at 6:00 PM where staff will provide a comprehensive update on the Agency’s Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) management strategy.
Zone 7 is committed to protecting public health and ensuring clean safe water for all residents and has been at the forefront of PFAS monitoring and management since 2019. In 2022, the agency unveiled a comprehensive PFAS management strategy that includes:
- Meeting all water quality regulations to deliver PFAS-safe drinking water to the Tri-Valley
- Pumping and treating water to remove PFAS
- Continuous monitoring of PFAS levels to ensure water quality
- Adding sentinel wells to enhance detection capabilities
- Diversifying groundwater sources by updating the Well Master Plan and introducing new wells
- Ensuring public access to PFAS data for transparency
- Coordinating with the San Francisco Regional Bay Regional Water Quality Board (SF RWQCB) which is investigating potential sources of PFAs through its Toxics Cleanup Division
- Upgrading the groundwater model for improved management
This strategy was presented in detail at a special Board meeting on August 31, 2022, with related materials available on the Zone 7 website.
Since the initial presentation, Zone 7 has made significant progress, including the construction and operation of the Stoneridge PFAS Treatment Facility, which now provides PFAS-safe drinking water to the region. Additionally, the Chain of Lakes PFAS Treatment Facility is under construction and expected to be operational in early 2025. These facilities are critical to addressing PFAS contamination and ensuring the continued delivery of clean water to the Tri-Valley.
Key actions taken by Zone 7 to date include:
- Constructing a sentinel well at Ken Mercer Sports Park to monitor PFAS plume movement
- Developing a new groundwater model to better understand PFAS movement in the basin
- Initiating a Regional Groundwater Feasibility Study to explore new wells in the Bernal Subbasin
The upcoming Board meeting will provide further updates on these initiatives and outline future steps in Zone 7’s PFAS management strategy. Community members are encouraged to attend in person, participate via Zoom, or watch the live broadcast on local channels.
