Zone 7 Water Agency to Deliver Flood Protection System Evaluation Results
Findings from Systemwide Analysis to be shared at May 21 Board Meeting
LIVERMORE, Calif. (May 6, 2025) – Zone 7 Water Agency will present the results of a systemwide flood protection evaluation to the board and the Tri-Valley community on May 21, 2025 at 7:00 PM during the regular public board meeting. The evaluation is part of Zone7’s work to develop a comprehensive Flood Management Plan to address flood risk now and in the future. Recent, flood events have caused widespread damage to Zone 7’s 37-mile flood protection system. Channel bank erosion and sedimentation have led to costly repairs. In addition, a combination of factors including urbanization, population growth, climate change, aging flood infrastructure, and changing environmental regulations has exerted additional stress on the area flood protection system.
In September 2022, Zone 7 approved the Flood Management Plan Phase 1 document as a high-level flood management strategy, describing “what” needs to be accomplished to reduce flood risk. Since that time, Zone 7 has been working on more technical analysis to help develop “how” to achieve flood risk reduction in both practical and comprehensive ways.
The current work has focused on a comprehensive update of the Hydrologic and Hydraulic model that includes updated land use and incorporates the latest climate change factors. The results of this will show flood risk now and in the future. This information will be shown and discussed at the May 21 Board meeting. After this Board meeting, the next steps will be to work on developing alternatives to address flood risk. This work is anticipated to be reviewed at a special Board workshop in Fall 2025.
